Wednesday Word
Today, September 8, was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Imagine, only 60% of Africa's Sub-Sahara population can read or write, compared to Europe where it is 99,1%. In Burkina Faso only 12% of the adult population can write a letter and in Mali only 19% of the adults can read a book. That as such can explain main parts in the backwarded position of the African continent in the world. In our information and media dominated society we face a simple rule: "knowledge is power". Once you are excluded from basic sources of information, you are basically excluded from the dominating society. In other words: literacy is a basic human right and should be promoted. Education should be equally leveld all over the world.
To elaborate on this fact a bit more, the power of knowledge does not only come with literacy but also with the variety of news sources we'll be provided in. A diversity in sources and opinions will create a more open society and emancipate the free thinking society. We need to know opinions from left and right, rich and poor, government and street to realy understand our position and contribute in person to an outweighed opinion. The well educated man/ woman will be capable of changing the system for a better world.
AngelTrust is supporting literacy to the fullest and calls out for reading 1 newspaper and 1 chapter of your favorite book today. Word!
SA WorldCup is cheating on humanity
Written by Matt
The news today is some cheering from the WorldCup organizers in SA. Over 90% of all tickets for the World Cup matches have been sold. We are happy for the organizers. Meanwhile we wonder how this upcoming will really benefit the rights and economics of African citizens, especially in SA. Recently a new study has been released showing that SA tops the ranking of most unequal society in the world. Mind you, Nelson Mandela and his Rainbow coalition, all following years of ANC in sovereign powers; since 1994 (that's 16 years in row) new black leadership has only increased the gap between the wealthy few and the oppressed majority of basically poor people. Nowhere in the world the society is more separated along racial and income standards.
Nelson Mandela is promoting SA as his beloved country, even in this video. But will he bear the pain of such an unequal society after all his dreams and passions? AngelTrust urges FIFA and SA leaders to reserve a 15% minimum of all profits form the World Cup to invest in areas like Soweto and Cape Flats. Let at least this coming World Cup be closing the filthy gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots'. That would make a real World Champion!
Dead Memorial Day
Written by Matt
Today we want you to have a 2 minutes of silence. Could we request for a 2 minutes silence for all those people who lost their lives because they happened to be in the wrong place on the wrong time? Could we, friends and suporters of AngelTrust, join in a silence to remember lives lost in vain, in Kenya, in Africa, all over the world? We would realy appreciate.
In the Netherlands on this day it is Dead Remembrance Day, where a complete nation keeps quiet for 2 minutes to remember those who died from war, injustice and irresponsible actions. The Dutch have a yearly ritual like this since 1946, just after the second World War. Please have a look at this video to get a feeling how impressive this can be. Today we should also remember all people who died in the 2007 air crash at KQ 507, heading from Cameroon to Kenya. 105 passengers and 9 Kenyan crewmembers lost their lives in here.
We urge people to not forget. As much as we should enjoy and celebrate life, we should also believe in a true justice system where death is an integral part of life and where those responsible for killing others will be put to justice. Not only in heaven, but to start right here on earth. We will forget you evil eyes, but we will never forget our beloved ones on the other side. Peace.
