Wednesday Word
Today, September 8, was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Imagine, only 60% of Africa's Sub-Sahara population can read or write, compared to Europe where it is 99,1%. In Burkina Faso only 12% of the adult population can write a letter and in Mali only 19% of the adults can read a book. That as such can explain main parts in the backwarded position of the African continent in the world. In our information and media dominated society we face a simple rule: "knowledge is power". Once you are excluded from basic sources of information, you are basically excluded from the dominating society. In other words: literacy is a basic human right and should be promoted. Education should be equally leveld all over the world.
To elaborate on this fact a bit more, the power of knowledge does not only come with literacy but also with the variety of news sources we'll be provided in. A diversity in sources and opinions will create a more open society and emancipate the free thinking society. We need to know opinions from left and right, rich and poor, government and street to realy understand our position and contribute in person to an outweighed opinion. The well educated man/ woman will be capable of changing the system for a better world.

Corruption in Kenya: 79% of business affected
Written by Matt
Fanatic graving in each other's filth! That is what today's Wednesday Word is about. Just recently the World Bank revealed that corruption in Africa is basically taking over most of the official economy. In Kenya 79% of all business activities is affected by corruption and bribes. That is: in 79% of all major and minor business activities a corruption element is included. Koert Lindijer, Dutch reporter and Kenyan inhabitant, analyses the Kenyan way of dealing with justice: Police officers offer customer friendly services like paying bribe money even via telebanking systems, most wanted terrorists are passing police control posts on just a few dollars and will not be found again. Businesses all over Kenya are including corruption fares in their regular business deals. But most striking in this analysis is that Kenya is a bad off. F.e. Nigeria at least can finance bribery via their massive oil revenues. But Kenya is running low in cash, actually dry. There are no more assets; no National revenue that can compensate for bribary deals no more. So the only means of corruption remaining is a political 'dirt campaign': rival political parties (ODM, PNU) accusing each other of being involved in corruptive deals. There seems to be no stopping in this anymore, or...?
Angel was killed in an unofficial corruption system. Acting like a supermarket does not mean you should expect the management will actually take responsibility... The cry for an easy dollar seems still to be winning over the respect for human life. Maybe we should cry out a new sound...
Terre'Blanche is dead
Written by Matt
That's right, this Wednesday it is about the front man of the Afrikaner Weerstandstandsbeweging (Afrikaner Resistance Movement). Eugene Terre'Blanche was a Boer-Afrikaner, sympathised with Nazi ideologies and got slaughtered this week by his two (black) employees in his own house.
Now if you check the video you will see the extremist Terre'Blanche: insulting the black community and urging his fellow companions to treat them and keep treating them as second rank citizens in their own country. An act of crime you could righteously say. On the other hand, the brutal murder could also be considered as an act of crime. Especially when seen through the eyes of all those people fighting for equal positions for races in South Africa.
South Africa, inspired and guided by Nelson Mandela, was the hope for a new Africa, for a new world actually. But things have changed and not for the better. You could ask yourself who is winning this crazy war. Should there be a winner at all? Or is this also a mirror for us, telling us revenge and aggression can never be the answer.
