Wednesday Word

Today, September 8, was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Imagine, only 60% of Africa's Sub-Sahara population can read or write, compared to Europe where it is 99,1%. In Burkina Faso only 12% of the adult population can write a letter and in Mali only 19% of the adults can read a book. That as such can explain main parts in the backwarded position of the African continent in the world. In our information and media dominated society we face a simple rule: "knowledge is power". Once you are excluded from basic sources of information, you are basically excluded from the dominating society. In other words: literacy is a basic human right and should be promoted. Education should be equally leveld  all over the world.
To elaborate on this fact a bit more, the power of knowledge does not only come with literacy but also with the variety of news sources we'll be provided in. A diversity in sources and opinions will create a more open society and emancipate the free thinking society. We need to know opinions from left and right, rich and poor, government and street to realy understand our position and contribute in person to an outweighed opinion. The well educated man/ woman will be capable of changing the system for a better world.
AngelTrust is supporting literacy to the fullest and calls out for reading 1 newspaper and 1 chapter of your favorite book today. Word!
Makmende for President! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt
OK, OK, it's about time. It's about time we pay tribute to this unexpected and highly original initiative the Kenyan 'Just A Band' has recently released: MAKMENDE! It has been noticed all over the world and just now is causing wild speculations about the untold truth about this formerly unknown hero. He will heal your wounds, he will cure our Aids, he will conquer hate and he will win coming Presidential elections in Kenya, come 2012. 'Make My Day' Makmende is an obvious and virtual creation to promote the new hit single Ha He, but to us it is much more than that.
Makmende brings new positive and new negative energy in an inner-circle, it is our time to eat, corrupt and pseudo democratic African society. Makmende breaths an atmosphere that is recognizable all over the world, where humor and courage can conquer any old fashioned system. AngelTrust embraces this kind of street activism: Do not complain, just act within your own capacity.
Makmende will solve all problems of HIV infections. Makmende will change the political system. Makmende will capture our hearts forever. Makmende will rule. Because Makmende, that is US!
Today we feature 'Usinibore', because it combines so beautiful a dance beat with some conscious lyrics. And because Angel would have loved to dance to this beat...

Traffic incidents and Sam Mtukudzi PDF Print E-mail
Written by Matt
The death rate from traffic injuries is higher in Africa than in any other region of the world. The road traffic injury mortality rate in Africa is 28.3 per 100,000 of the population, compared with 11.0 per 100,000 in Europe. This implies that each year some 280,000 Africans die on the roads, imagine that. Sam Mtukudzi is one of them. He died last week, together with his driver in a lorry just outside Harare, Zimbabwe. We pity for him, his entire family and of course a special mention for his famous father Oliver Mtukudzi.

Why do so many people have to die from mainly unnecessary causes of death? The unacceptable rate of deaths on African roads is partly to blame on the greedy and ever expanding dreams of those in charge of our nations. We expand our cities like we have to compete with the West, where no profound infrastructures and safety policies are put in place. With an exponential rate of urban growth in coming years to be expected in Africa, even higher rates of traffic injuries are to be expected. Africans, watch your children. Take some proper safety measurements for your children and loved ones. If you won't do it yourself, no one else will do it for you.

Angel, the beautiful person we tribute to as a symbol of protecting our own lives, was a big fan of Oliver Mtukudzi... RIP Sam.
