Wednesday Word
Today, September 8, was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Imagine, only 60% of Africa's Sub-Sahara population can read or write, compared to Europe where it is 99,1%. In Burkina Faso only 12% of the adult population can write a letter and in Mali only 19% of the adults can read a book. That as such can explain main parts in the backwarded position of the African continent in the world. In our information and media dominated society we face a simple rule: "knowledge is power". Once you are excluded from basic sources of information, you are basically excluded from the dominating society. In other words: literacy is a basic human right and should be promoted. Education should be equally leveld all over the world.
To elaborate on this fact a bit more, the power of knowledge does not only come with literacy but also with the variety of news sources we'll be provided in. A diversity in sources and opinions will create a more open society and emancipate the free thinking society. We need to know opinions from left and right, rich and poor, government and street to realy understand our position and contribute in person to an outweighed opinion. The well educated man/ woman will be capable of changing the system for a better world.
AngelTrust is supporting literacy to the fullest and calls out for reading 1 newspaper and 1 chapter of your favorite book today. Word!
Referendum in peace?
Written by Matt
Today is the day that peace should be coming and war is expected. Today - as many other days - the people are to expect new forms of leadership from those who have been mandated to secure our lives and bring in prosperity in low quality life. Today Kenya celebrates her "true act of democracy" with a referendum to favor or oppose a new constitution. Analysts from all over the world have been carefully watching attempts of change during the postcolonial African area and conclude likewise: any attempts to change a system in Africa has basically deteriorated the living conditions for majorities.
How will a new constitution benefit us people? Will it cost us a dozen of lives, calculated as collateral damage? Will it put those in power already in positions to enlarge their powers? Will new legislations actually be implemented or will it only create conditions to construct new offices, hire new 'executives' and buy more expensive cars? Or will a new constitution actually bring us a legal bed for protecting human rights and uplift the position of marginalized areas?
Who will be eating and who will be starving after today in Kenya. President Lula (Brazil) proclaimed in his inauguration speech that he would be a happy man to end his term of presidency with all Brazilians drinking a cup of coffee in the morning and having a proper meal at night. Now that is what we call true revolution! Don't use the big words if the small incentives cannot even be touched. Live now and achieve now. More street activism!
Nelson Mandelas Birthday
Written by Matt
So we all have celebrated the 90th birthday of the greatest Man on Earth and also AngelTrust likes to tribute to this strong mind. We show you a 'must see" from African soil, Emmanuel Jal. Jal is the kind of person to make it out of daily struggles in Sudan via artistic energy, word up!
Meanwhile under Madiba's old eyes the world keeps turning and mostly not in the most respectful way. In Vienna / Austria the AIDS 2010 conference takes off, hosting all kind of celebrities like Bill Clinton and Ban Ki-Moon.So world leaders gather over this ongoing drama and seem to remain empty handed..
Nowadays 5 Million people get AIDS treatment (merely in the West), where 15 Million people (merely in Africa) do not get any treatment. People do die of AIDS, when not provided proper treatment, we all know that. So question is: Isn't Aids curing a basic human right? In the West people do not die of AIDS anymore, where in Africa people die like flies. It should be a matter of distribution, relocating some lose petty cash in a more equal way over the world. But our World Leaders seem stuck in their own policies and so solving a minor problem remains a big issue. AngelTrust is asking you, is the life of an African worth less than the life of an American...? In any case. Happy Birthday Madiba!
