Today, September 8, was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Imagine, only 60% of Africa's Sub-Sahara population can read or write, compared to Europe where it is 99,1%. In Burkina Faso only 12% of the adult population can write a letter and in Mali only 19% of the adults can read a book. That as such can explain main parts in the backwarded position of the African continent in the world. In our information and media dominated society we face a simple rule: "knowledge is power". Once you are excluded from basic sources of information, you are basically excluded from the dominating society. In other words: literacy is a basic human right and should be promoted. Education should be equally leveld all over the world.
To elaborate on this fact a bit more, the power of knowledge does not only come with literacy but also with the variety of news sources we'll be provided in. A diversity in sources and opinions will create a more open society and emancipate the free thinking society. We need to know opinions from left and right, rich and poor, government and street to realy understand our position and contribute in person to an outweighed opinion. The well educated man/ woman will be capable of changing the system for a better world.
AngelTrust is supporting literacy to the fullest and calls out for reading 1 newspaper and 1 chapter of your favorite book today. Word!
Live Aid 1985, true aid activism or just a western symbol?
Written by Matt
Today exactly 25 years ago we faced the London Live Aid concert for "the starving in Africa". An impressive amount of $50 Million had been collected and the world cheered about this so called spirit of solidarity. The world in 1985 showed solidarity with the African motherland. Described as the Woodstock of the eighties, the world's biggest rock festival was organised by Bob Geldof to raise money for famine relief in Africa. Some 70,000 people were attending the Wembley festival and over 1,5 billion people watched the concert live on TV. No less than David Bowie, Wham, Dire Straits, Queen and Madonna were performing for an outrageous crowd. "Don't go to the pub tonight. Please stay in and give us your money. There are people dying now", were the exact words of Sir Bob Geldof.
Now what has this all brought to Africa. Has it contributed to a better Africa, has it really saved Africa? Since 1985 Africa has seen reductions in income and peace process. Rwanda was yet to come. Zimbabwe still faced a relative prosperity back in these days. And Kenya was yet to expect its post election violence. Meanwhile more people were dying of famine, HIV Aids and wars. And the well meant initiative did not have a proper follow up. The West relieved their minds and wallets just for once, where no African artists were even allowed to perform on stage. AngelTrust is asking you is the West can or should save Africa...
Kenyan Child abuse
Written by Matt
Finally legislatures do something about child exploitation. Human trafficking, child pornography, early marriages, under-age girls held against their will, these are some of the stories we have been made to watch over and over in mediums all over the world, other countries doing something about this vice while the rest sit back and do nothing. Kenya ,one of the countries with high cases of this vice has now decided to do something about it. Through nominated Mp Milly Odhiambo,The Counter-trafficking In persons Bill,2010 borrowed from the Children Act 2001 will this week be passed to not only protect the human trafficking but also the under-age kid. Under this bill, employees found with under-age girls as house maids, the parents or guardians who offer their kids for employment or marriage, persons that lure girls outside the country on the promise of job only for them to lead a life of sexual exploitation or any other form of slavery?well if you fall under this category you will be held liable. The punishment is simple serve a 15 year jail term or alternatively pay a fine of 15million Kenyan shillings.Personally this is simple, its about respecting the rights of every single human being around you and i have to applaud the Mps for this beautiful move,i hope it becomes a law sooner than later!
