Wednesday Word
Today, September 8, was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Imagine, only 60% of Africa's Sub-Sahara population can read or write, compared to Europe where it is 99,1%. In Burkina Faso only 12% of the adult population can write a letter and in Mali only 19% of the adults can read a book. That as such can explain main parts in the backwarded position of the African continent in the world. In our information and media dominated society we face a simple rule: "knowledge is power". Once you are excluded from basic sources of information, you are basically excluded from the dominating society. In other words: literacy is a basic human right and should be promoted. Education should be equally leveld all over the world.
To elaborate on this fact a bit more, the power of knowledge does not only come with literacy but also with the variety of news sources we'll be provided in. A diversity in sources and opinions will create a more open society and emancipate the free thinking society. We need to know opinions from left and right, rich and poor, government and street to realy understand our position and contribute in person to an outweighed opinion. The well educated man/ woman will be capable of changing the system for a better world.

Celebrating the African baby

There are 27.7 million people in Uganda. But by 2025 the population will almost double to 56 million, close to that of Britain, which has a similar land mass. In 44 years its population will have grown by nearly as much as China's. You look at these numbers and think 'that's impossible. Well, wake up, because this is the harsh reality. A typical Ugandan woman gives birth to seven children - an extraordinarily high fertility rate that has remained largely unchanged for more than 30 years. Half the population is under 15, and will soon move into childbearing age. Only one in five married women has access to contraception. And not just in Uganda. Across much of sub-Saharan Africa the population is expanding so quickly that the planet's demographic map is changing. By 2050 Chad, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Niger, Burundi and Malawi - all among the poorest nations in the world - are projected to triple in size. Nigeria will have become the world's fourth-biggest country. The Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia will have vaulted into the top 10 for the first time. Nearly one in four of the world's population will come from Africa - up from one in seven today.
A number of African leaders, including Uganda's president, Yoweri Museveni, believe that their countries are underpopulated, and that a bigger internal market and workforce will boost their economic prospects. In a speech to MPs in July Mr Museveni said: "I am not one of those worried about the 'population explosion'. This is a great resource."
What do you say: is it a privillage to be born as African baby. Do we as potential parents face a responsibility on birth control and sharing limited resources among each other. Is it a human right to be born? Or for human rights reasons, are we to control birth.

World Cup Babies, part 2

"Football is war", a famous Austrian soccer coach once said, refering to the tactical and psychological duels that have to be faced before winning a game. But could he ever had expected that in some African situations this expression is very close to reality. In an interview with some female soccer players in Nairobi they could describe the hussle they have to go through, meanwhile only facing opportunities in the game provided they sleep with the coach.
What is that makes women a victim of sexual abuse? It can't be they provoking all of it. It must be men, prevailing their supposed to be powers on female victims. Is this a MAN's world? No it's not! Its a stupidity in mankind allowing vicious circles like this. Some sexuality is compounded by a belief that sexual intercourse with a virgin will cure a man of HIV or AIDS. But after all this can not be the explanatory factor.
Once women decide to run and control a game, they need to be treated as sports athletics, not as sexual preys. AngelTrust will insist: treat men the same way we treat our women...
